History of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University

The Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University was founded in 1882 as the “School of Fine Arts by the famous painter of that time named Osman Hamdi Bey. Osman was a historian, and museum curator. This university is the first of its kind across Europe to offer numerous courses in the field of arts. It began with 8 instructors and 20 students.

In 1914, the school became co-educational. In 1928, it got converted into an academy and named was changed to “State Academy of Fine Arts”. During 1969, it was given the name of “Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts”. During July, 1982, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University’s status was changed and it became “Mimar Sinan University”. Finally, during December, 2003, the university admin changed its name to “Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University”. Since that time, it is being called nothing but Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. It provides state-of-the-art facilities to the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students.
