History of Gülhane Park

The name of the Gülhane Park was given to it in 18th century. This park used to be one of the outer gardens of Topkapı Palace and mainly consisted of a grove. One of the outer sections of the park was opened for public during 1912. It used to have recreation areas, coffee houses, and play areas etc. Later on, a mini zoo was inaugurated in this park. During 1926, the statue of Atatürk was placed which has been a sculpture of Heinrich Krippel.

The park underwent a number of reconstructions and renovations throughout the history. The zoo was removed with fun fair and picnic grounds. Also its excursion routes were re-arranged and the big pool was renovated in modern and appealing style. Much emphasis was put on natural landscaping during 1950s, revealing the trees of 18th century.

The Museum of The History of Science and Technology in Islam

The Museum of The History of Science and Technology in Islam is present in former stables of Topkapı Palace, on the west of the park. This was opened for public back in 2008, and inauguration was done by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

This museum is featured with 140 replicas of inventions of 18th century. These include the creations of geography, astronomy, chemistry, medicines, architecture, physics and warfare etc.
